New Years Eve

If Family Fortunes had a question about what music you would hear at a New Years Eve party (or a Hogmanay party, as some call it), my guess is that the song Auld Lang Syne would be at the top of the answers board, but there's so much more to New Years party music than one song!

The tradition of taking one another's hands and singing Auld Lang Syne together on the stroke of midnight on January 1st each year goes back as far as any of us remember. It is symbolic of endings and beginnings, and of friendships renewed. The lyrics are often sung in Robert Burns' original Scots, but, when translated, refers to memories of good times together, hence the rousing nature of these annual performances!

Most traditional New Years dinners and parties include many other Scottish songs that convey a sense of nostalgia for the past (not least for Scotland itself) and hope for the future. Charlie is My Darling is a popular patriotic tune with a simple, singable melody, as is the Skye Boat Song. Then there are romantic songs such as A Red, Red Rose - a lament for the love of a 'bonnie lass' that ends with the following stanza:

And fare thee well, my only Luve
And fare thee well, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho’ it were ten thousand mile.

I've had the pleasure of playing a number of New Years parties over the years, a particularly memorable one being 1995-96: a traditional Scottish dinner at a Bradford Masons Lodge, complete with kilts, haggis, tatties and neeps, and of course lots of Robbie Burns songs sung together! Others have incorporated more modern songs, including crooning hits like Frank Sinatra's My Way.
